Charminar Pedestrianisation Project
The Charminar Pedestrianisation Project was conceptualized in 1993. It was kick-started in 2007 with JNNURM funds.
On March 17, 2016, responding to a question by MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K Taraka Rama Rao said that the project would be completed in four to five months. Admitting that there has been a delay in the project, the minister offered to visit the site personally and address loop holes. He also agreed to a meeting with Old city legislators.
Lack of parking lots and toilets, and loss of livelihood for the hawkers and shopkeepers are some of the issues in the Charminar area. Minister K Taraka Rama Rao said talks are with owners of private parking spaces for entering into contracts with provision of transferable development rights. To curb the pollution, battery operated vehicles and minibuses will be introduced.
